The unhideable waterfall in the hidden town of Hunasgeria.

ROUTE:

A9 -> Kalalpitya Junction -> Ukuwela -> Elkaduwa -> Hunasgeria.

IMPORTANT FACTS AND POINTS TO REMEMBER:

·         The road that leads to the transmission tower from the Hunasgeria Hotel is very difficult to use.

·         The road is not tarred and it is slippery on rainy days.

·         Refrain from polluting the environment that benefits the nation.

Dedicated to all passionate tourists.

There is no doubt that it is very easy to confuse Hunasgeria with Hunnasgiriya, which is a famous town on the Kandy – Mahiyangana route towards Meemure. Though the two names sound alike they are quite distant from one another. This story is about the Hunas Falls Hotel which is situated in the Hunasgeria Estate.

The Hunasgeria Hotel is quite simple to find. Use the Elkaduwa – Wattegama route and once you pass 5 km make a turn to your left.  This road will lead you to the hotel as well as the tea factory.

If you wish to view the Hunas Falls, you need to purchase a ticket. The ticket counter is situated a few blocks in front of the hotel and the price of a ticket is just Rs. 50 per head.

There is a natural water pond over the Hunas Falls but you will not be able to use it unless you are a guest at the hotel. The same applies to the bridge over the falls. The waterfall is a wonderful sight to the eye, even when there is less water in its source.

We were highly pleased by the fact that we got to view this beautiful waterfall and even more pleased after having a refreshing bath from it. A simply amazing experience!

We then made our way to the top of the mountain, but to be honest, this was no easy journey. The road had not been tarred and it was uneven to walk on but amidst the difficulty we reached the top.

On our way to the top, we also came across a closed tea factory. It seemed like it had been closed for quite some time, yet it stood in all its glory ready to pick up from where it stopped. Many smaller factories were also closed down and workers were left to seek other occupations. The reason remains concealed.

At the top of the mountain stands the gigantic telecommunication tower. The presence of this tower seems to have destroyed the natural beauty of the environment. As much as I am against the destruction of the environment, I cannot deny the necessity of technological development. If it was not for the tower, there may not even be a road.  If the road is refurbished it may create room for more non eco friendly constructions, which makes one argue if the road was worth having in the first place.

The first tower belongs to a radio station. Two gentlemen who turned out to be guards of the tower were kind enough to give us information regarding this place. They stated that at times the entire area would be covered in thick mist. We could not help but think how it would be to actually work in a place like this.

We stopped for a break and then proceeded towards the other towers. The road was extremely difficult to travel. So my advice would be to take a hike. After enjoying all that nature had to offer we returned home completely contented with the journey. I am proud to state that we did not leave behind a single polythene bag and I request that you don’t too. If we destroy environment, the future generation may not even have the pleasure of writing articles of this sort.
